Pup’s movie corner

Pup’s movie corner

If you haven’t seen Star Wars: Rogue One, stop reading. Go see the movie now.

I was pretty stoked to see this movie. After seeing the trailers and finding out what it’s about, I was even more excited. For years, fan have complained about why in the world would you design the ultimate weapon with such a ridiculous flaw. Now we know.

I was amazed by a lot of things in this movie, but probably the biggest thing is how someone went to the Disney movie execs and said ‘hey, we’re going to make a movie where everyone dies. Everyone.’ and then having the execs say ‘sure, go ahead’. How did they manage that? Jedi mind trick?

The movie filled in a lot of holes in the New Hope and added a lot more depth to the Star Wars universe. What I thought was most interesting is getting a better view about the alliance. Like many alliances, this one was hanging on by a thread. Everyone wasn’t in and everyone was certainly not ready to commit to fighting. It took the bravery of a few people to wake up the masses and take on the threat.

While I’m used to these types of endings where the heros die from Asian cinema (pretty much the cornerstone of a good hero – that they die), this was really unexpected from a western movie, especially one made by Disney. It brings a harsh reality that often times gets missed. We have probably never heard of most heros and what they’ve done for the world (or for certain countries/people). Those that win and those that survive gets to tell the tale. The dead does not speak, no matter their heroics.

This could just be my 2017 mentality, but what also strike me about the movie was about taking action. You don’t just sit by as you watch the world get taken over by bullies and tyrants. If there’s an opportunity, we must do just that. We must stand up for the weak, for those that can’t stand for themselves and for the future of the dream that we are all in this together.

There are so many things against the people right now. So many people without hope and so many being oppressed by those tyrants mad for power. For those of us who can do something, however small, it’s time for us to stand up. It’s time for us to come together, come out of the woodworks, even if we’re just a rag tag band of misfits. We all have a part to play in this and we must fight back the tyranny.

Decisions Decisions

Batman comes out this Friday. That is a must see of course. I love the Bat. I understand his anger. I understand his wanting to personally clean up the scum that's plaguing his city. I understand his need to be scarier then the things that go bump in the night.

That part is interesting, but I don't think that's what really fascinates me about Batman though. I'm fascinated by his enemies. Parts of me can really relate to them, or at least I think I have parts of them in me.

Scarecrow - Who doesn't like someone who wants to spread fear? He does it for fun and for research. I can respect that. I really like the idea of being able to spread fear and have people paralyzed within their own minds. All those thugs, low-lives, molesters, murders out there causing fear on people. Wouldn't it be great to have them trapped in their own minds with a nice dose of gas so they can experience what they do to others? How interesting would it be to become fear itself?

The Joker - Who doesn't love this villain? And no, the one in my head is not the happy or goofy Joker that's been portrayed in the 60s TV show or by Jack in the first Batman movie. The Joker I know is a sociopathic sadistic murder who does things with little reason or care. He is interested in causing chaos and that's about it. I can appreciate that. I understand even the Joker does things for reasons. People always have some agenda. What if one day there was a person that didn't have an agenda? A person that just wants to cause death and destruction for the fun of it.

Of course, Mamma Mia also comes out this Friday. As the guys will tell you, I've been wanting to see Mamma Mia for years now. Every time we're in Vegas they hear me bitching about not going to see Mamma Mia. I know it's not much of a decision for most people. The Batman crowd and the Mamma Mia crowd doesn't really mix, but then again, most people aren't Pup.

Decisions Decisions.

A notch above any movie made for less than $20 – Thrifty movie dude

Well paced, fun, and desperately cheesy, it’s like a vacation for your mind – Amanda Hugnkiss

What’s brilliant about this movie is that it doesn’t mess with any philosophical trapping, sociological subtext, but instead could be used as an afternoon special to warn kids about what happens when you drink too much for days at a time – Mr. Frog’s reviews

Zombies and vacation? What could anyone else ask for? – Low expectation dude

This movie was pretty good. Ok, now where’s my 40 oz for saying that? – Ray Ray

This movie has a definite place in my heart due to the witty script and dialogue of the actors. They make it sound like everything was improvised and thought out at a bar – Burma Times

Pup’s Movie Corner

Today we will review the movie Hitman

Based on a video game (sheese, can people not get any original ideas here? I’ve got a script that’s ready. You just need to ask.), Hitman is definitely targeting a specific group of audience with this movie. The target group that likes lots of people getting shot, fancy clothing, and a very hot Russian girl.

There’s really not much to this movie. If you’ve seen the Bourne Identity, this is pretty much the exact same movie. The Hitman does dress better than Bourne though.

I know this is really not much of a review, but there really isn’t that much that stands out in this movie. There’s nothing there that hasn’t been done, or seen.

I would hope that if you decide to go see this movie, you’re not thinking that it would challenge your mind or this is a movie that will change the world or that this would be an Oscar contender. If you get all those thoughts out of your head and just expect a movie with a lot of people getting shot in flashy ways and a gorgeous Russian girl, then I think you’ll have a good time.

Pup’s Movie Corner

Today we will review the movie Beowulf.

Based on a just a poem (albeit quite long), Hollywood managed to make this into a full length movie. To make things more interesting, they made a good part of the movie fully CGI. While it was interesting watching part of the movie completely in CGI and almost like a game, I went to the theaters to watch a movie, not to watch the intro to a game.

The movie itself was fine. The plot was simple enough. Men can’t resist the hotness that is Angelina Jolie and they’re pretty much cursed forever. I’m not quite sure how they got a PG-13 rating on this. Not that I’m complaining, but there was a lot of nudity going on (don’t worry ladies, there is male nudity too). Even if it’s supposed to be digital nudity, it was still nudity.

So here’s my problem with the movie. It doesn’t have that much to do with the movie itself. I have more of a problem with the idea of Beowulf as a ‘hero’. For in my mind, he is no hero at all and that kinda ruins the movie for me.

Beowulf fought for personal glory. He fought for the sake for fighting. He fought so that his legend would grow, so that there would be stories told about him. Everything he did was about him wanting to be glorified and show off that he’s better than others.

I understand that this problem is strictly my own issue. Beowulf is just not my idea of a hero. Sounds silly but a hero is a hero because they didn’t want to be a hero in the first place. Heroes are people who are put in or fall into a difficult situation and they perform above and beyond themselves and what others would have done. Heroes only fight when necessary and fight for a purpose/goal greater than themselves. That is the definition of a hero and the complete opposite of Beowulf.

Given the choice, a hero would never have wanted to be a hero. That’s what makes them so great. They rise when they have to, when no one else would. They rise to protect. They fight when necessary, but only as a last resort.

Perhaps I’m being too critical about this. I think most people will enjoy Beowulf. It’s a fun movie to watch with a very interesting obvert use of CGI and good special effects. However, I regard my idea of a hero quite highly. Beowulf contradicts every idea I have for a hero and I believe I was too caught up on that to enjoy the movie.

Pup's Movie Review

Tonight Starring: Stardust

I saw this movie this weekend and I gotta tell you, other than knowing that Neil Gaiman (author of the sandman series) wrote and produced this movie, I didn’t know what this movie was about. Since I’m a big fan of Sandman and Claire Danes, that was enough to get me to go.

This movie was a very welcome surprise in the fantasy genre in a summer full of sequels. Sure, the overall plot has been done several times (nerdy boy searches for love, nerdy boy transforms to hero to save the girl, they live happily ever after), but this movie does a good job in putting a new angle on the storytelling. For those of you that tries to 'figure out' the movie instead of enjoying the story telling, cut it out. It's not that you couldn't figure out the plot and ending of the movie within the first 5 min of the movie, but you'll miss out on the beauty of this movie which is the storytelling.

Also, different than many movies this summer, this wasn’t a movie that seemed like just a 2 hour commercial (e.g., transformers) for its merchandise.

If you liked the Princess Bride from many years ago, I think you’ll like this movie as well. There are many elements in Stardust that are similar, but not so much as it seems like a copy. The supporting cast for this film is wonderful. You’ll see Robert De Niro as you’ve never seen him before and I don’t know what kind of movie magic they did on Michelle Pfeiffer, but she looked amazing.

Besides the story, what I found amazing was the soundtrack. I believe the composer is Ilan Eshkeri and he did a very good job in a score that really help emphasis the emotions of the scenes (especially the chase and fight scenes) and the mystifying setting of a fantasy movie.

Overall, this was a great fantasy romance movie. Those of you that know me know that I like the cheesy movies, and this is surely one of the better ones I’ve seen in a while.

Go see this movie. Take a date. You won’t be disappointed.

Bleach

I just finished episode 135 of this anime series. It still amazes me that there’s nothing remotely like this anywhere in the world. Apparently, only one culture recognizes that cartoons are not just for children.

Over 135 episodes, a lot of character development can happen. Sure there are the big action and fighting episodes that you would expect from any good anime. With 135 episodes though, there is plenty of room to develop the characters to be more than these people who fights all the time. There are a lot of people who wouldn’t enjoy these episodes as they’re kinda boring in comparison, but I think these are the episodes that makes the show great.

These interlude/plot/silly episodes make the characters more than just ‘cartoon’ characters. These are the episodes that make the show more than just good guys vs. bad guys. Sure, fighting bad guys is one thing, but knowing why the good guys really fight for makes you cheer for them so much more.

The main character nearly goes insane because he blames himself for not being strong enough to protect his friends and family. Many times you see him just get beaten down badly and you feel for this guy cause you know why it’s so bad. It’s not just bad because he’s getting his ass kicked, but you feel bad because of his feelings of not being able to be strong for others. You also cheer that much more when he powers up and fights back (yes, I know most anime I watch has the exact same pattern).

How often do you see a cartoon that has that level of story? No, most of the ones out there are good guys beat bad guys the end. That’s the other thing, why do good guys always win? They really don’t you know. Just think, how much do you know about cobra commander reasons for taking over the world? OK, that’s a silly example, but you know what I mean.

I’m sure no one really knows what I’m talking about. I just wanted to make sure I remembered.

'Must Love Pups'

SGP (Single Gray-ish Pup) ISO SF (stuffed ok). Enjoys lying on the bed (sometimes couch) most of the day, sleeping on people’s heads, drinking, and making plans for world domination. Looking for Single Female that doesn’t steal my stuff (stealing other people’s stuff ok). Must tolerate fuzzy-ness, slight megalomanism, fire paranoia, and late night drunk calls.

So I went to see ‘Must love dogs’ this weekend. Very good if you’re into cheesy movies. There are some overly cheesy parts, but most of it was good with excellent banter and lines for Diane Lane’s character.

"Would you like to come in?"
"No, I'd rather die, but thanks!"

Ok, you have to see it in the situation. It really was funny. John Cusack’s role wasn’t that large, he was still great.

I strongly recommend this movie unless you’re the 90% of the male population that would never see a cheesy movie unless there’s a good chance you’re gonna score for going. In which case, go only if there's a good chance you'll score.

My social calendar is finally filling up after not really traveling for the first half of the year. So far, I've got trips for: Atlantic City/Philly (this weekend), Friend visiting me (this is rare as only 3 friends have visited me in the 1.5 years I've been in KC), Las Vegas, Los Angles, New York City!! Yay!

Another crazy ass busy week at work. So....

Ding Ding Ding… Order’s up.

You’re about to get served.

Last night I was vegging out in front of the TV and was just flipping through the channels. What do I see when I landed on Fox? A show called ‘So you think you can Dance?”

Did anyone else see this? It’s fantastic.

I’m sure some of you know I am all about the dancing. Mostly club and street dancing stuff. Not that bull-shit booty bumping crap you see at the clubs or in some bar and grills when it’s getting out of hand. People, that’s not dancing damn it.

Abeit lately, I’ve just been observing dancing from the sidelines since there are no real clubs or raves or anything here. That and I’m getting old and it’s starting to look ridiculous. And sometime even dangerous. I might pull something you know… damn old body.

So anyway, this show is in the same format as America Idol. People go and dance for judges. There were some very amazing dancers. All kinds of different styles. Then of course came the best part. The bad dancers. This is 10x funnier than the bad singers on American Idol.

One different thing is that most of these dancers know they were bad and just wanted to try a dance audition. Can’t say I can hate on that. Although the disillusionment of one being really good when they’re not is quite comical.

Well, after watching the show, I was all inspired to start dancing. That coupled with the fact I might be doing some clubbing next week made me get my ass of the couch and start practicing some moves. I even pulled out the old DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) Pad out for giggles.

I’m not going to go into details, but it's quite funny. If there's a dance-off come next week, not that I think there would be one, but if there is. You bet yo ass Pup's going to be ready to serve.

No real point to this post. There’s no refund on the 5 minutes of your life you’re never getting back :p

Pup-Man*

* Geek Post warning!

Nah hah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah… Pup-Man!!!

I went to see Batman Begins with a friend last night. I tell ya what. It’s good. Even better than the original one with Jack Nicholson. The Batman and Scarecrow were both very well acted out. The movie also stayed true to the title as it revolves around Batman, and not as much on the villians or anything else.

I read some reviews where people either liked the first part or the second part. I can see how different people would enjoy one or the other, but if you’ve read a lot of Batman over the years, you’d know both parts were pretty good.

I’ve always liked Batman. Unlike other super hero, he has no super powers to rely on. It’s just one angry angry man kicking ass and using his head. He’s also not all goody goody like Superman or other super-heros. Batman is a dark character and for the most part, many of the story lines that follows him remains just as dark. He walks a fine line between being good, and joining those that he hunts.

What’s also very interesting about Batman are the villains that he faces. These are not your alien, mutant, or super freak varieties. They’re just regular people. Regular people who are crazy that is. All of whom, by the way, are based very much on specific psychological disorders and whom, I can relate to. Scary as that sounds, I can see myself being quite a few of them.

Villians such as the Joker, Two-face, Scarecrow, and Dr. Freeze all have such rich background stories. They're not just your typical criminals out for property crimes, but are generally out there to hurt people for various reasons which I'm not saying I approve, but I understand.

When I watch movies like this, or read about great feats other people do, I always ask myself “what the hell have I been doing?”. I come home from work, maybe go play ultimate, if not, grab some food and watch TV or play some games. Isn’t there more I could be doing? Something actually productive?

I’m not suggesting I fighting crime or anything. Although after the movie, I mentioned that I could be Pupman here where I live. However, the only crimes I would fight would be a couple of under-age drinking and maybe trying to scare someone from buying that hideous H3. Not really the stuff of super-heros.

Finding a new goal has really been on my mind ever since I finished school. It’s been quite difficult to pick up something new and improve myself with. Physically, mentally, socially, whatever it is. I just hate to just be sitting around. It makes me feel boring and nothing is worst than that feeling that you're boring.

Although I must say, it’s hard to fight the urge of being lazy too.

I really wish I could take a month off or so to wander the country and find something new for myself. I'm very jealous of a couple of my friends that are doing that right now between jobs.

So, does anyone have any suggestions as to what new things I should get into? Hobbies, interests, ways of life? The only idea I’ve been playing around with is running for some type of elected office. Can you imagine? Pup on a ballot for something?!

Makes me giggle just thinking about it.

Happy Tuesday!!

The Puptender

Just wondering, does anyone else out there watch The Contender? I picked it up about a month ago and now I’m watching back-to-back episodes on Sunday nights. It's a big odd as I’m not a big fan of the reality shows and I don’t enjoy boxing all that much.

The show and premise seems a lot different to me. The main one is that what they’re doing on their show is their talent and livelihood. It’s not getting on a show and pretending to be something or trying to do something you may know very little about.

These guys are boxers, not guys off the street wanting to be boxers and they’re on a national stage to box. It would be like if I was on a reality show for psychologists. Wouldn’t that be so exciting? Me sitting around coming up with tests, running correlations and linear regressions on all these variables, and maybe writing some reports? That and watching me in meetings most of the days. Exciting prime time stuff huh! There are many monkeys in my cube that keeps things exciting with their poop throwing.

These guys on the show don’t get to go home and go back to doing what they used to do like on other show. This is what they do, and when they lose, they all have to think that maybe they’re not a top fighter like they think they are. It’s not good to realize that after training for so long.

Hearing what these guys are fighting for also gives you a great attachment to these guys. All of these guys come from extremely poor countries and/or backgrounds. Most fight to give their family something to cheer for and for a chance for a better life. Hearing their stories and backgrounds makes you think how lucky many of us has it.

I know many of us work for these same reasons everyday, but it seems very different to have to put yourself in physical harm in order to do this. Not the possibility of being hurt on the job, but actually being hurt as part of the job.

For these guys and many others that didn’t have the luxury of getting a good education, this maybe the only ticket for a family to break out of the poverty cycle. It's sad to imagine, but it makes me feel proud and so lucky to have parents that worked so hard so I could get an education and for all the things that I've wanted.

It remind me of how good I have it to be able to get paid for using my brains instead of my fists.

Ok, just wanted to mention it.

On other notes of this weekend: Grill corn is DELICIOUS. I covered it in a garlic butter sauce and get it grill for a while. Damn that was good corn. I am now looking for a grill for the summer. I prefer Charcoal, but gas seems SO much easier. Suggestions anyone?

Very upset that COPS was not shown this weekend. Instead it was hours and hours of NASCAR. You could argue it maybe a similar population in both of these shows, but NASCAR keeps focusing on the little cars going around in circles instead of the fans. I want to see the fans damn it!!

I saw an amazing Mullet this weekend. It was nice and long and permed. It was something special to see.

Sin City Rocks. Hehe.. I saw boobies. There were also lots and lots of violence. I highly recommend it.

I also rented Bridget Jones’ Diary: The edge of reason that made me feel quite gay. Not that they're anything wrong with that. Also, not that this helps, but I also took the little quiz in the bonus section to determine which guy is better suited for me.

That is all. I say GOOD DAY!

Endulge my Geekyness. I found this Anime somewhere yesteday. I've never seen it, but it sounds like the best anime EVER!!!! The title alone is Macktastical. Saving the world by finding lost raves and beat back the shadow guard. What better premise for story than that?

The main character is the heir to the power of the Rave (mild manner prince by day but by the power of raveskull.. oh wait, wrong series..). Also, his battle cry is 'Rave-olution'. How corny and Pupish can you get? Cornier than T's left foot.

Check out this description.

50 years ago a war was fought between the forces of the Rave and the powers of the Shadow Stones. In the final battle, Shiba, the first Rave Master, and his companion Plue believed that they had vanquished the Shadow Stones forever. But they had underestimated the resilience of the Shadow Stones, unleashing the explosive power of the Overdrive and destroying one-tenth of the world. And the Raves were scattered to hidden locales across the globe ...

... until one fateful day, in the idyllic environs of Garage Island, Haru Glory fishes the strange dog-like animal Plue from the sea. And the old warrior Shiba must pass his massive Decaforce Sword on to a new Rave Master. So begins Haru's journey to find the lost Raves and save the world from the evil Shadow Guard.

But Haru will not be alone on his fantastic adventures. He'll be joined by Elie, a spunky girl on a quest of her own -- to discover the mystery of her forgotten past. And Plue, the little hero who knows more than he can say about the whereabouts of the missing Raves, will guide them - a little haphazardly - on their fateful quests. Together, they will journey through awesome new worlds, encountering a vast array of both friends and enemies as they seek to fulfill the duties of the Rave Master.

Three heroes. Two quests. One destiny.

Geek Alert!

I just found this out and thought you may find it interesting.  During the Comic Con this weekend in San Diego, the full name of the last Star wars movie was revealed.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

It's a nice homage to the original title of the last Star Wars trilology, Revenge of the Jedi.

Please Mr. Lucas, don't screw this up.  You can redeme the first two by making this Macktastical.  I'm free for consultation anytime.  Have your people call mine.

Happy Friday!

Conspiracy theory on the Cancelling of Angel

Everyone's pissed at the WB for cancelling Angel. To that I will extend my middle finger. However, don’t be fooled! The WB is merely the puppet. The true enemy here is the ultraconservative religious groups that’s growing more powerful and influencing our lives without anyone realizing it.

Angel is merely the latest causality in their war against anything depicts the supernatural or fantasy. There were many before and there will be many other later.

Look at the trend of religion taking over music, movie, and all forms of media. Everything on TV is your traditional family, or cute hetero teenagers running around. Where is the diversity? Well, diversity is not part of their plan. Diversity has no part in their “vision”.

They will program the TV so all the viewers will see what they want you to see. They will show you how you should act, who you should want to be like, and what you should think is “normal”.

It’s a programming/re-programming tool. Others have used it before. Be aware.

Take a look around you, religion is once again taking over. It's never been good for anyone. Strong religion = war. Take a looking in the history books, most wars had a religous underlinning.

These are powerful people in powerful circles. How to change things I do not have an answer. Evil, it all depends on who's defining it. It’s all in the fine print. You just have to look closer.

Still foaming at the cancellation of Angel. Just thought I’d rant.

Oh yea.. this is going to be a good night.

Dark and stormy outside. A bottle of Jack and the End of Evangelion fresh from the DVD case.

Time to get the distrubing depression on!
